New Sisters Surprise!

 


Surprise! I discovered that I have two newly discovered sisters! I just met them for the first time in New York State. New sibling connections are becoming more common with the help of Ancestry.com.  Let me tell you how this miracle came to be!

It started a couple of years ago when my niece searched for relatives on Ancestry.com.  The results showed that I have two new sisters. What a double surprise! However, my new sisters didn't know about each other either. 
The State of New York opened up their adoption papers a few years ago. One of the new sisters got her original birth certificate which led to her to discover her new sister. Then it led to an exchange of letters, next to phone calls and finally they met for the first time. It really is amazing!
So what is my connection? Ancestry.com confirmed that my biological sister has a connection to our two new sisters. Double Fun! So my sister started writing them letters, then emails and finally phone calls.  Then we finally a family Zoom call during the Pandemic.  It turns out we have two new sisters and have a lot in common. Surprise!

Our newly discovered sisters are both retired teachers just like my biological sister and I. There is a strong physical resemblance to us in their school yearbook photos too. My son had the first on-person contact with one of the new sister's sons on vacation. Guess what? They both look a lot alike too. 
After two years of online communication, we finally decided to meet last week in their hometown in upstate New York. It is also my Dad's hometown where I visited my grandparents long ago. ❤️ 
We all stayed at a hotel nearby their birth town. We brought  husbands, a cousin and a few children. It was a heartwarming reunion for all of us!
We visited the local Town Hall and looked through their High School Yearbooks at photos of our Dad and his former girlfriend.  They were both top students, class leaders and sports stars. They dated until he left for Michigan State University. Then they saw each other during their college summers. My Dad didn't meet my Mom until they were both college graduates in Michigan.  I guess we'll never know all the details. But, here I am with two new delightful sisters. It's a story full of surprises, love and loss. I can only thank my lucky stars that we have finally found each other, at last. It is a modern family fairytale! ✨️ 📖

I didn't choose to have both my phone and computer crash on the the same day! However, that is what happened and now I am experiencing 'tech withdrawal.'A week ago, my phone screen began flickering yellow before it completely shut down. Within hours, my laptop crashed and then refused to turn back on. It was scary to lose two electronic devices in one day. Spring Time in New York 🌼

Landing in New York is a kaleidoscope of tall, brick buildings, blue rivers and bare trees in April. 🏫 There are still patches of snow as we drive north through rolling hills. ☁️ The sky is a mass of grey clouds and I'm glad I brought my winter coat. The forests are covered with a cushion of buds on the branches giving a hint of Spring in the air.🌱  Our oldest son Karl works at an idyllic boarding school nestled in the countryside north of the city. 🏫 We spent his birthday driving a few hours north to Woodstock complete with old hippies, young yuppies, funky shops and organic restaurants. 🕊️   🌼 We ordered scrambled tofu for breakfast with only two bald headed hippies eating nearby. One of them told the waiter that he used to dine here years ago and still remembered Mary the cook. He wondered if she still worked there. Live With the End in Mind

  Life is full of unanswered questions. Would we live our lives more fully if we knew when we were going to die? I don't really want to know my end date. 📅 I prefer to think I'm going to live a long, happy life with my husband, children and grandchildren. I intend to enjoy each day and follow my daily routines. 👍 I enjoy starting each morning with freshly brewed coffee ☕️, a walk🚶‍♀️, and hopefully a quick trip to the gym.🏋️‍♀️ I also enjoy substitute teaching, 📚 reading a books, 📖 going out to eat, 😋 and looking for treasures at Target. 🛍  The author Barbara Becker explores living our lives more fully in her recent book, "Heartwood." The title refers to the center of trees 'heartwood ' that stays firm when the wind blows. Like 👍 the trees, we need to stand firm, but live with the 'end in mind.'
